How to Stop a Dog Barking

Soon I will explain how to stop a dog barking, first however it’s important to understand why dogs bark As soon as puppies can bark they start to realize that it’s a great way to get attention. Old dogs still know that barking gets attention and they sometimes bark if they are bored or need exercise. They also bark due to a lack of mental stimulation or because they have been at home alone for too long.

If this is the reason your dog’s barking, start to take action to remedy the problem today. Try to take your dog for a walk once a day where possible. Obedience train your dog a few times each week and play fun interesting games with him. Give him a few new toys so that he can entertain himself when he’s alone. Give your dog some 1 on 1 time every day for at least 5 minutes.

Another common cause of barking is fear. If you dog is afraid of loud noises he may start barking. If this is the case with your dog, put him somewhere he feels safe such as in his crate. Give him a treat of his favorite toy and let him know that everything is ok. Sometimes a radio playing in the background helps to calm the situation.

Separation anxiety is another common cause of barking. If your dog feels highly attached to you, it may start barking when you leave. Separation anxiety can also show up after a death in the family or after moving houses. The easiest way to treat this cause of barking is to train your dog that you will always return when you leave. You can do this by beginning to leave for a few minutes at a time and then coming back into the house. If your dog hasn’t barked then you can give him a treat. Little by little start increasing the amount of time you have gone for. Slowly but surely your dog will learn that you will always return, even if you have gone for several house or more.

If you have tried the methods above and you haven’t managed to stop your dog barking, you could try a Citronella collar. Not everyone is a fan of these collars but they do seem to solve the problem in many cases.
